Ghost: History
The saga of the papacies: from the catacombs to the stadiums (2010–2025)
Ghost is one of the most fascinating and unclassifiable bands in contemporary rock. Founded in the shadows by Swedish musician Tobias Forge in the late 2000s, the band built its legend on two pillars: rock/metal music with irresistible melodies and a unique theatrical mythology where each era is led by a new papal character, the so-called Papa Emeritus. With their anonymous musicians —the Nameless Ghouls— and their aesthetic combining satanic ritual, inverted Catholicism and melodic pop, Ghost went from playing in European basements to winning Grammys and headlining festivals around the world.

Prologue: The Architect in the Shadows
Tobias Forge and the birth of a vision:
Tobias Forge grew up in Linköping, Sweden, playing in death metal bands before conceiving Ghost: a project where theatricality, anonymity and irresistible melodies would be as important as the music itself.
Era I — Papa Emeritus I
The arrival from the catacombs:
Ghost burst onto the world scene with their debut Opus Eponymous, an album blending classic heavy metal with irresistibly melodic satanic anthems. Papa Emeritus I took the band from Scandinavian basements to international stages.
Era II — Papa Emeritus II
The global consecration:
With Papa Emeritus II at the helm, Ghost signed to a major label, released Infestissumam —their first #1 album in Sweden— and won a Grammy. The band went from being a cult secret to becoming a global presence in rock.
Era III — Papa Emeritus III
The Grammy, the radio and the legal storm:
Papa Emeritus III led the band at their biggest moment of exposure yet: the Grammy victory, their first US radio hit with Square Hammer, and a lawsuit that ultimately revealed Tobias Forge's identity to the world.
Era IV — Cardinal Copia / Papa Emeritus IV
From stadiums to TikTok: the Prequelle and Impera era:
Ghost reached their commercial and cultural peak with Prequelle and Impera. Cardinal Copia —the most charismatic and colourful character yet— proved the band could reach millions, and Mary on a Cross became a TikTok viral phenomenon with over a billion streams.
Era V — Papa V Perpetua
A new era begins:
With Skeletá, Ghost opens the most recent chapter of their papal saga. A new character, a new sound and a debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 confirm that the Swedish band remains one of the most original forces in contemporary rock.
