The Papa V Perpetua Era

The Papa V Perpetua Era

2025-presente
Papa V Perpetua is different from everything Ghost had presented before. He is not a numbered Papa Emeritus. He does not come from the traditional lineage. He is a fraternal twin—brother of Frater Imperator, son of Papa Nihil and Sister Imperator—who grew up separated from his brother without knowing of his existence, incorporated into the Clergy at some point in his adult life and chosen by Sister Imperator to succeed Papa IV before her death. His name was first revealed on March 5, 2025, when he was announced as one of the performers at Black Sabbath's final show on July 5 at Villa Park, Birmingham. Ghost confirmed his participation on social media with the message: 'We wish to inform you V is coming… To Birmingham on July 5th.' The suspense was total: nobody knew what he would look like, how he would sound, or what 'Perpetua' would mean. His official debut came with the single 'Satanized', where a processed, deep voice—comparable to Darth Vader from the Star Wars saga—announced his presence unequivocally. The video hinted at a possible origin linked to heresy and medieval monks, expanding Ghost's visual universe into new territory. The aesthetic was immediately recognizable as Ghost but radically different: darker, more industrial, more imposing. Skeletá (2025), the album of his era, marked the highest commercial point of Ghost's 15-year career. With influences from 1980s hard rock and AOR—but without losing the darkness that defines the band—the record delivered expansive choruses, polished productions and lyrical content more vulnerable and introspective than any previous album. Thematically, Skeletá moved away from Impera's grand historical metaphors to focus on the individual: fear, loss, mortality and the search for personal redemption. The result was historic: Skeletá debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, becoming the first hard rock album to lead that chart since AC/DC's Power Up in 2020. First-week vinyl sales—44,000 copies—set a record for the format's modern era. The album reached #1 simultaneously in multiple countries. The single 'Lachryma' received a 2025 Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance. At the 2026 Swedish Grammis, Ghost received six nominations including Album and Artist of the Year, the first in those categories in the band's history. On the lore front, Papa V Perpetua's relationship with his fraternal twin Frater Imperator is the central narrative arc of this new era. In 'Chapter 20: Arrival of a Secret Agent', Frater openly expressed his hostility toward Perpetua, feeling demoted by no longer being the frontman. However, later chapters showed a gradual rapprochement between the two, with Frater finding renewed motivation in his new role as head of the Clergy. At a show in London on April 19, 2025 during the Skeletour, Papa V Perpetua confirmed onstage that Papa Emeritus I is his uncle—partially clarifying, and further muddying, the Emeritus family tree. His Skeletour 2025 was one of the band's most ambitious tours, with dates across Europe, North America and beyond. With Papa V Perpetua, Ghost enters completely new territory: a frontman without the weight of the Emeritus surname, with his own identity built from scratch, and with the band's greatest commercial success backing him up.
