Opus Eponymous

2010

Opus Eponymous was Ghost's debut and one of the most impactful metal debuts of the 21st century. Before the album, the band self-released the 7-inch single "Elizabeth" in 2010, which caught the attention of Lee Dorrian (Cathedral) and his Rise Above Records label. Produced under the pseudonym Gene Walker —Tobias Forge's alias— the album blended 70s heavy metal (Black Sabbath, Blue Öyster Cult), progressive rock and explicitly satanic lyrics with clean production and irresistible melodies. Ghost appeared on the scene anonymously and theatrically, with a pope-dressed skull-faced frontman surrounded by masked musicians. The underground response was immediate: Opus Eponymous was acclaimed as one of the best debuts of the decade, leading Ghost to perform at the Roadburn festival and tour throughout Europe.
